Fun Fact Friday: It Rains 122 Days a Year in NYC — We're Open for All of Them

Happy Fun Fact Friday from the corner of 47th & 9th! ☔ This week we're talking about the one topic every New Yorker is an expert on: the weather. Specifically — how often does it actually rain and snow in Manhattan? The answers surprised even us.

Fun Fact #1: It rains (or snows) about 1 in every 3 days here

Manhattan averages around 122 days of measurable precipitation a year. Do the math: that's roughly one out of every three days where something wet falls out of the sky. So the next time you're caught on 9th Ave without an umbrella, don't feel bad — statistically, it was always going to happen.

Fun Fact #2: New York gets MORE rain than Seattle. Yes, really.

Central Park averages nearly 50 inches of rain a year — Seattle only gets about 38. Seattle just spreads its rain across 150+ drizzly gray days, while New York prefers to save it up and dump it all at once in dramatic downpours. Honestly? Very on-brand for this city.

Quick stats, Central Park edition:
🌧️ ~122 wet days a year  |  💧 ~50 inches of rain  |  ❄️ ~30 inches of snow

Fun Fact #3: Snow shows up about a dozen days a year

NYC averages close to 30 inches of snow per winter, spread over roughly a dozen snowy days — though it swings wildly from season to season. The single biggest snowstorm on record? 27.3 inches in one day, during the January 2016 blizzard. Half the city went sledding in Central Park. The other half still showed up for brunch. We respect both.

Fun Fact #4: Out of 365 days a year, UT47 closes exactly ONE

Thanksgiving. That's it. That's the list.

All ~122 rainy days? Open. Every one of those dozen snow days? Open. August heat waves, February slush, that one random 65° day in January that makes everyone act unhinged? Open, open, open. 364 days a year, the lights are on and the kitchen is hot at 683 9th Ave — because our team believes a rainy Tuesday is exactly when you need a warm plate and a good drink the most.

So here's your forecast: whatever the sky is doing, there's about a 100% chance we're open. Come dry off, warm up, and let Hell's Kitchen's weather do its thing outside the window. 🌧️🍳🍸
